SCIS OVER VIDEO

SCIS Over Video
SCIS can enhance on-site services by providing the same high-quality interpreting over a video connection both by appointment and on demand. SCIS over video can augment on-site services in situations such as:
  • Quick workplace conversations
  • Last minute or emergency needs
  • Gaps in coverage until an on-site interpreter can arrive
  • In rural areas where on-site interpreters may not be within driving distance
  • Where the Deaf consumer prefers the anonymity of an interpreter from outside of their community
  • When highly specialized skills are required but not available locally
Because bandwidth and signal strength vary, interpreting via video should be used with the consent of the Deaf consumer. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that Deaf individuals are afforded effective communication. The Deaf person themselves is often the best judge of whether or not a particular solution is effective for them, and thus, in compliance with the law.

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), the oldest civil rights organization in the United States, offers guidance on when and how video interpreting should be provided here (https://www.nad.org/resources/technology/video-remote-interpreting/
